Eat the Frog for Health and Fitness: Conquer Your Day, One Green Bite at a Time

Today I want to share a concept that I have been practicing in my own life and with my clients for years. It has been an absolute game changer for my health - physically, mentally, and emotionally and it’s helped so many others I’ve worked with as well.

It’s a concept called Eat The Frog

Yeah, I know it sounds funny, but just bear with me.

The alarm goes off. Have you ever hit snooze one too many times, knowing a packed schedule and looming deadlines await? Maybe this was also the week you promised yourself to prioritize health but felt overwhelmed by where to even begin. We've all been there!

Enter the "Eat the Frog" strategy, a productivity technique that can be your secret weapon for conquering your health and fitness goals.

What does Eat The Frog mean?

The concept originates from Mark Twain, who said: "If the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that that is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long." In essence, tackle your most challenging task (the "frog") first thing in the morning.  This sets you up for a sense of accomplishment and frees you to approach the rest of your day with confidence.

Identify Your Health Frog

The first step is figuring out your personal "health frog." This is the one task that will have the biggest impact on your overall health journey.

Here are some ideas:

  • Morning Movement: Is starting your day with a brisk walk or a workout your struggle? Make this your frog!

  • Meal Prep Powerhouse: Does healthy eating fall by the wayside during busy days? Prepping your meals for the week becomes your conquering frog!

  • Hydration Hero: Does staying hydrated throughout the day feel like a constant battle? Conquering that water bottle becomes your first win!

Don't try to swallow an entire frog whole! Start small. If a full-hour workout feels daunting, begin with 20 minutes. Building consistent habits is key, so prioritize consistency over intensity at first.

Plan for Success

Preparation is key to "eating the frog" successfully. Here are some tips:

  • Schedule it In: Block out dedicated time for your "frog" in your calendar, treating it like any other important appointment. If you wouldn’t miss it if your boss scheduled it, don’t skip out on yourself.

  • Set Up Your Environment: Lay out your workout clothes, plan your workout routine, have a rain plan for your walk, or fill your water bottle the night before.

  • Embrace the Win: Celebrate your accomplishments! Crushing your morning workout fuels your energy and sets the tone for the day. Conquering your pre-work meal prep keeps you on track. This initial success builds confidence and propels you forward.

It's a Journey, Not a Race

There will be days when "eating the frog" feels impossible. That's okay! Expect it because it’s not a matter of IF it happens, but when. Maybe some days you take a smaller bite but the point is to keep going! This is a marathon, not a sprint, and even small steps forward make a big difference over time.

Feeling Empowered by the Frog Effect?

Imagine starting your day with a win every single day! That's the power of "eating the frog" for your health and fitness. You conquered your initial challenge, built momentum, and set yourself up for a successful day. This positive cycle fuels confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

Ready to Make "Eating the Frog" a Habit?

Conquering your health goals can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to go it alone! Building a personalized plan and having a supportive guide can make all the difference.
