The $140 Billion Question: Do You Actually Need Supplements?

The supplement industry is worth over $140 billion.
Woah. That’s a lot of capsules, a lot of promises, and honestly, a lot of very expensive urine.
I get asked constantly: Do I actually need to supplement? My honest answer is probably yes — but after looking at hundreds of lab panels and helping people dial in what they're taking, what you’re currently taking probably isn’t it.
Supplements are a tool. They are a strategic, science-backed option when used correctly. What they are not is a shortcut, and they are definitely not a replacement for eating real food and sleeping like someone who cares about their long-term health.
No supplement will save you if the basics are not in place. We are talking consistent protein intake, quality sleep, regular movement with a concentration on building muscle, and good stress management practices.
Supplements work with the foundations, not instead of them.
But let's assume you are already working on those basics. Here are the 8 reasons I actually recommend supplementation to my clients.
1. Dietary Gaps and Deficiencies
Most people are not hitting their micronutrient needs through food alone. I wrote all about this as well as my top 5 recommendations in The Supplement Debate if you want to dig deeper.

2. Hereditary or Genetic Needs
Some of us have genetic variations like MTHFR or hypercholesterolemia that affect how our bodies process, remove, or detoxify certain things. In cases like this, your body needs extra targeted support above and beyond what you can get from your diet.
3. Metabolic Health Support
Blood sugar regulation, insulin sensitivity, and metabolic function can all be influenced by targeted nutrients. If we know these issues exist, we can support your body to get to a healthier place in a quicker, more efficient way.
4. Performance and Recovery
Creatine, electrolytes, and protein support are legitimate tools for anyone building strength or pushing their physical capacity. If we want more payoff for our effort, these can make a big difference.

5. Gut Health and Digestion
It’s not uncommon in our modern society to have compromised gut health and digestion. We are not, in fact, what we eat, but we are what our bodies are able to absorb. Our gut health strongly correlates to our immune system, mental health, skin health, and more.
If we have compromised digestion, we won’t be effectively breaking down and absorbing the nutrients from our food. Things like digestive enzymes, probiotics, and targeted fibers can make a real difference for clients who struggle with absorption and GI symptoms, leading to robust, positive downstream effects.
6. Stress Management and Sleep
Adaptogens and targeted sleep support (hello, magnesium glycinate!) are some of the most impactful tools I use with clients alongside the foundations when we know we’re dealing with a high-stress or lower-sleep season of life.
7. Detox and Methylation Support
We don’t add supplements to detox our body; we add in nutrients when appropriate to support our body’s own natural detox processes. Your liver, kidneys, and GI tract are working hard and often can use some backup.
8. Brain Health and Cognition
Certain nutrients and specific nootropics have real research behind them for cognitive function and long-term brain health. I don’t know about you, but I am doing everything I can to protect my money maker!

What You Will Never See on My List
Fat burners, juice cleanses, or anything that promises results in 10 days. With supplements, we are trying to bridge the gaps and support our body in operating at its full potential. Because of that, quality MATTERS.
I personally only recommend supplements and brands that I use and trust. It’s vital to me that everything is third-party tested, manufactured using GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), and shipped and stored where I know I am getting a fresh product.
This is why I use Fullscript for myself and my clients. There is no hunting through Amazon and no guessing if what’s on the label is actually in the bottle.
"Ok, but where do I start for me specifically?"
That’s exactly where lab work comes in. Guessing at your supplement protocol is how you end up spending $300 a month on things your body doesn’t need, or worse, missing the one thing it does.
I offer functional lab reviews as part of my services. This means we pull very thorough labs and look at them through a different lens than your annual physical. We identify actual gaps, not just what falls outside a standard reference range.
So if you're interested in making sure your supplements are dialed in and you want a professional set of eyes on your labs, you can learn more about lab work here.
Supplements done right are one of the highest-leverage things you can do for your health. Done randomly, they’re just expensive optimism.
